David Hobson himself describes The Promise more or less as a recording of songs “outside the classical genre”, previously performed only at his own concerts.

At the risk of sounding as though I just cycled all the way from 1972 to write this review, Aeriae’s Hold R1 would seem to be best described by a whole parade of terms my mother would still have felt groovy applying to our Commodore 64 “word processing machine”.

There have been few occasions on which I have received an email from someone requesting that I meet them at an Inner West interchange, hop on a culturally hijacked bus with 40 others and wheel around the suburbs watching art unfurl on the nature strips, and thought “This might just be crazy enough to sort of work.”
The Western Ring Cycle did more than that – it worked.
